Anti-Inflammatory Components of the Starfish Astropecten polyacanthus

Inflammation is important in biomedical research, because it plays a key role in inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, allergies, asthma, and even cancer. In the present study, we describe the inhibitory effect of crude extracts and steroids isolated from the...

Sucrose uptake is driven by the Na+ electrochemical potential in the marine bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus.

Na+ was found to be essential for the accumulation of sucrose by Vibrio alginolyticus. Sucrose uptake was completely inhibited by the addition of proton conductor at neutral pH, but not at alkaline pH, where the primary electrogenic Na+ pump generates the Na+ electrochemical gradient. We therefore conclude that sucrose transport is driven by the electrochemical potential of Na+ in this organism.

Endophthalmitis caused by Vibrio alginolyticus.

Vibrio alginolyticus is a facultative anaerobic gram-negative bacillus found in normal marine flora. Ocular infections induced by V. alginolyticus are extremely rare. We report a case of endophthalmitis caused by V. alginolyticus to draw attention to V. alginolyticus infections following ocular injuries.

Draft Genome Sequence of the Human-Pathogenic Bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus E0666

Vibrio alginolyticus is a Gram-negative halophilic bacterium with worldwide distribution. In this work, we report the draft genome sequence of a V. alginolyticus strain (E0666) isolated from Epinephelus coioides ascites in the Shantou city of Guangdong Province, China.

Vibrio alginolyticus infections in humans.

Two clinical isolates of Vibrio alginolyticus from New Jersey are reported, one from a mixed stump infection and the other grown in pure culture from the conjunctival discharge of a man with conjunctivitis. The biochemical characteristics and antibiotic susceptibilities of these two isolates are presented. Human infections caused by V. alginolyticus are reviewed.
